Bringing the Texas Heat - Come Back Cover Reveal

Hey, gang! I'm sharing the cover of Come Back today. It's the debut novel of one of my FAVORITE people, Melissa Maygrove. She's a real-life Texan, and a gifted writer. I was privileged to be able to beta read Come Back, and I can tell you the heat doesn't stop with the sexy cover. :)

I'll have Melissa back in a few weeks for an interview, but for now enjoy the eye candy!

Hope all of you A to Z maniacs have started with a bang, and I look forward to checking out your themes over the course of the month.

Come Back

Cover design by Carrie Butler, Forward Authority Design Services
Sometimes a single choice alters the course of a person's life forever.

Left behind by everyone she loves...

Rebecca Garvey had the promise of a California future dreams are made of, until the wagon train her family was traveling with left her behind. Now she’s slowly dying in the wilderness, abandoned and stripped of her self-worth. Once the shock of her desertion turns to embittered despair, she doesn’t want to be found. Then a handsome stranger challenges her convictions and changes her mind.

Headed for Texas, chased by the demons of his past...

Seth Emerson knows exactly what he wants. Working to save for a cattle ranch of his own keeps him busy and keeps his pain buried. Rescuing a stubborn woman from the hills of New Mexico Territory isn’t part of his plan—but she’s exactly what he needs.

Making greater sacrifices than either of them could foresee...

Seth and Rebecca set off on a risky journey and a quest for truth, each healing the other’s love-starved soul along the way. Will they give in to their growing attraction? Or will they honor their commitments when Seth returns Rebecca to civilization... and her betrothed?

As part of the fun, I'm going to let you know when in time I'd like to go back to...

Would I like to give Napoleon a taunt on the fields of Waterloo? Or perhaps I'd choose to be cozied up on a couch watching TV with the rest of the US when Neil Armstrong boot-scoots on the moon for the first time.

Heck, I'm even contemplating going back and convincing our US forefathers to write in an amendment requiring public thrashings for congresspeople who don't show up to work. *grumbles*

We'll find out when I'd like to go back to in a sec, but first, let's check the details on PK's book!

Sounds fantastic, right? Truly can't wait to read it, PK!

So let's see, where would I go in time? I'm a history nerd, so I'd be super excited to relive any major event--but honestly, most of history's major events would be super dangerous to be a part of.

That being said, I don't think I could pass up an opportunity to see living dinosaurs. 8 year old me would never forgive current me if I did.

So send me back to the Jurassic period, PK! But maybe in a helicopter or something I could use to watch from a safe distance. :)

Also wanted to pass on reminder that the New Adult Fall Fling book sale is still going strong! You can pick up several NA titles for cheap (and maybe even free) this week. Click the banner for more details!

My Moonsongs Anthology, containing the first 3 Moonsongs books,  is on sale for .99 cents as part of the event. Even if you've purchased the three stories separately, I'd greatly appreciate the help of another download. A spare hundred pennies goes a long way to helping an author with his ranking and future sales. :)

Plus, it contains a sneak-peek of the newest Moonsongs book, Dragon's Game, that's coming out next week!

What's Under The Cover? I'll Need Your Help To Find Out!

Hey, gang! I've got book covers on the brain today for LOTS of reasons.

First, our New Adult Lit Chat last night was all about book covers and what takes them from good to Oh-My-God-Did-You-See-That?! If you're curious about what we talked about, or maybe looking for a few tips, you can listen to our audio show and read the Twitter transcripts, HERE.

The second thing that's had me pondering the beauty behind the pictures that are literally worth (or represent) thousands of words is the number of FANTASTIC new covers I've seen floating around the blog world this week. Here are a couple of favorites:

This is the cover for Christine Rains 13th Floor collection. Besides housing one of my favorite series of short, speculative fiction, I think this cover is totally creepy and evocative--just like the stories! You can learn more about the series and author HERE.

Now this one is truly an all-time favorite of mine now. Sheena-kay is a dedicated blogger friend, and I think this cover is out of control with awesome! I'll admit I'm biased here, because I'm such a huge fan of graphic novels and comics, but I truly don't know how anyone couldn't be at least a little curious to read this based upon the cover. For more info on the book and Sheena-kay, head over HERE.

Finally, the last thing that's had me thinking about ye old book cover is that I've been working on the one for the next story in my New Adult, speculative fiction series, The Moonsongs Books. This will be book 4, and I definitely learn a lot each time I go through the design process.

And thinking along those lines, I was hoping to recruit some of you fine folks to help me share the cover when it's ready. Specifically, I'm shooting for October 15-18, with book 4 being released shortly thereafter.

So, if you think you could share the cover for my latest on one of those dates, please sign up via the form below. I'll be in touch to provide all the details in the weeks ahead.

I truly appreciate the help! Here's a sneak-peek at the cover to tide you over in the meantime:

Any guesses as to what kind of nasty thing could be hiding behind the curtain? I'll just say it's going to be Jenny's biggest test--and craziest adventure--yet. :)

SIGN UP FOR THE MOONSONGS BOOK 4 COVER REVEAL, OCTOBER 15-18, HERE!

Secret, Secret, I've Got A Secret... & Speculative Fiction Chat

Okay, it's no longer a secret. BUT, you'll totally have to go snooping to get all of the details. :)

But before that, why not listen to this little number from the Secret Sisters (Hunger Games Soundtrack)

Back to the news! My good bloggy-wrting pals, Michael Di Gesu & Siv Ottem, have been collaborating on Siv's upcoming release, Secrets Of The Ash Tree. (The title alone has me intrigued!) Michael has crafted the cover, Siv the story.

We'll get a first look at the cover on Monday, and hopefully Siv will share a little about the book as well. So be sure to head over to their blogs then for the full scoop from these talented folks!

ALSO, if you're a fan of speculative fiction (SciFi, horror, fantasy, etc.) you'll definitely want to check out the transcript from our latest #NALitChat. For the uninitated, we chat about New Adult fiction every Thursday night (9 PM Eastern) over on the Twitters  by using the #NALitChat

We now also do a special audio broadcast along with the usual Twitter chat (we take questions and comments from Twitter and present them to our guest authors to answer on air live... you'll hear me, too :), and last night we had two awesome authors (Kat Vancil & Amanda Havard) on to talk about writing spec fiction, Dr. Who and much more.

Here's the link to the transcripts (both the Twitter & audio--check them both at the same time for the full experience)

Have a great weekend my friends!

I'm Back & Bringing Courage With Me!

Hey, gang! How the heck are y'all? I've missed you (and my computer) more than I can say. :)

I'm finally back to the blog after making the loooonngggg trek from Texas to California. Along the way, I saw desert, mountains, more desert, vineyards and more than a few terrible drivers. -_- (Seriously, who lets these jackwagons operate 2 ton projectiles of death unsupervised???!!!)

But, I'm proud to report we are moved in (sort of) and getting settled in our new town with only the minor moving-related injuries to report. (I swear I've got "box thumb". It's a rare disorder that comes from opening up and breaking down way too many damned boxes.)

To get my feet wet, this week on the blog I'm featuring a couple of my favorite folks, who also happen to be talented authors. :) First up is Ms. Carrie Butler, who'll be bringing us the sequel to her debut novel, Strength (ladies will remember the cover, I'm sure), this October.

Carrie has crafted another beauty of a cover (one I might just remember!), and all of the details on Courage are below... also be sure to give Carrie a hand with her blog tour if you have a spot available. She comes up with the best stuff for her tours. :)

And let me just say one more time that I REALLY missed the heck out of all of  y'all!

COURAGE by Carrie Butler

Series: Mark of Nexus - Book 2
Author: Carrie Butler
Category: New Adult (NA)
Genre: Paranormal Romance (PNR)
Release: October 15, 2013
Formats: E-Book & Paperback

Courage (Mark of Nexus #2) features four unique points-of-view. While the novel stands alone, it is best enjoyed after Strength (Mark of Nexus #1).

♥  ♥  ♥

Making a deal with the bad guys wasn’t the highlight of Rena Collins’ semester, but, hey, it saved her boyfriend. Now, in order to appease the human-altering organization known as ERA, she’ll crawl under their microscope while they study the Mark of Nexus and plot their eye-glazed version of the future—until she realizes that’s not all they’re plotting.

Wallace Blake has always known his girlfriend is unlike most girls. But now that information has surfaced regarding the two bloodlines that balance his supernatural race, he finally understands why. Rena belongs to one of them. She’s been augmenting his power, all along...

Enter: Corynn Catley. Brought into the country under the guise of an internship, she’s intended to become ERA’s secret weapon. Kind of. Her abilities cancel out Wallace’s, rendering him powerless, but that’s exactly what he’s always wanted. Too bad it only works when his girlfriend’s not around.

All the while, Rena fails to notice the crush her geeky best friend, Aiden Ross, is nursing. He’d give anything for her to see him in a new light—even reinvent himself through questionable means—but there’s a reason people are told to be careful what they wish for. Finding the courage to tell her could put everyone’s lives in danger.

Fate, IWSG, & Indie Life - The Chemistry of Community

Hey gang! Hope everyone is doing great. Sorry about my Debbie Downer post on Monday, but it really drove a point home for me, and also inspired today's ramblings. :)

I didn't get to post my IWSG post last week due to prior blog obligations. (Did I mention I'm the world's worst administrative assistant? Don't ask me to look at a calendar and schedule things in a reasonable manner--ever.), and today is the day for the monthly Indie Life bloghop. So I figured I'd knock them both out AND put my words into action.

In regards to the latter, first up, I'd like to share the cover of an upcoming book by one of our fellow authors, Meradeth Houston.

The Chemistry of Fate
(Available April 2013)

The chemistry between Ari and Tom is reactive, but a deadly secret in a family journal will tear them apart if they can’t avoid fate.

“They are everywhere, can be anyone, and are always the last person you’d expect.” When Tom stumbles across his grandfather’s journal, he’s convinced the old man was crazier than he thought. The book contains references to beings called the Sary, immortals who are assigned to save humans on the verge of suicide. They certainly aren’t allowed to fall in love with mortals. Which the journal claims Tom’s grandfather did, resulting in his expulsion from the Sary. As strange as the journal seems, Tom can’t get the stories out of his head; especially when he finds the photo of his grandfather’s wings.

Tom’s only distraction is Ari, the girl he studies with for their chemistry class.

Ari has one goal when she arrives in town: see how much Tom knows about the Sary and neutralize the situation. This isn’t a normal job, but protecting the secrecy of the Sary is vital. If Tom is a threat to exposing the Sary to the public, fate has a way of taking care of the situation, usually ending with the mortal’s death. While Ari spends time with Tom, he becomes more than just an assignment, but how far can a relationship go when she can’t tell him who she really is? When she finds out just how much Tom actually knows about the Sary, Ari is forced to choose between her wings, and her heart.

THE CHEMISTRY OF FATE is a companion to COLORS LIKE MEMORIES and is set before the latter takes place.

~ About Meradeth ~

Meradeth’s never been a big fan of talking about herself, but if you really want to know, here are some random tidbits about her:

>She’s a Northern California girl, but now lives and teaches anthropology in Montana.

>When she’s not writing, she’s sequencing dead people’s DNA. For fun!

>She’s been writing since she was 11 years old. It's her hobby, her passion, and she’s so happy to get to share her work!

>If she could have a super-power, it would totally be flying. Which is a little strange, because she’s terrified of heights.

IWSG & Indie Life -
The Chemistry of Community

A little about the bloghops first:

What is the Insecure Writer's Support Group (IWSG)?

Click the pic to join IWSG!
Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. Visit others in the group and connect with your fellow writer.

What is Indie Life?

Click the pic to join Indie Life!
Purpose: Write anything indie related: something that will inspire or help a fellow indie; something that celebrates a release or a milestone; something that talks about the ups and downs, joys and heartaches of Being Indie.

Posting: Post on the second Wednesday of the month. Then visit others in the group and connect with your fellow indie writers.

FINALLY, onto the post!

So I mentioned my post from Monday. To summarize, it was about a young author who died before her debut novel was published. It's out now, and her friends, agent, and the writing community at large are trying give her book--and her memory--the proper debut experience they deserve. You can read about it HERE.

One of my biggest insecurities as a writer is this nagging fear of being alone. Don't get me wrong, I embrace the isolation writing requires. I love the hours I get to play inside my own head. But there's something about not 'officially' being attached to a group or tribe that unsettles me a little.

Sure, I'm a member of IWSG and Indie Life. I host a Twitter chat for fans and authors of New Adult literature. I'm involved in various other writing communities online. But most of those are things I've elected to do. I'm included by choice, not necessarily because I belong. None of them would cease to exist if I wasn't around.

Which brings me to my point: On the surface, all of these groups are just skeletons--things formed to give structure to our little writing community. They are constructs created to give us some semblance of belonging. They don't seem all that substantial.

But when I read comments like I received on my previous post, and see how the writing community can really work together for someone, I'm reminded of how much deeper all of this goes.

A community that seems like a simple mixture of separate individuals on the surface, is really a complex solution of people who are so fundamentally connected and intertwined they become a uniquely cohesive substance.

In particular, I think the indie group of writers really embody that concept of togetherness. I've seen indies band together to do amazing things--literally change an entire industry. They've worked to get each other noticed by readers and onto bestseller lists that refused to acknowledge their existence just a few years ago.

That kind of cohesion requires a special bond. One that I'm extremely grateful to be a part of, and to support.

CassaStorm Cover Reveal

Hey gang! Hope you've all had a fabulous week, and are ready to take the weekend by storm (see what I did there?). Or maybe just sleep a lot...

Today, a man who needs no introductions (who I'm going to introduce anyway, because that's just what we do around here), has a brilliant new cover to reveal.

I'm excited to share that our Ninja Captain, Alex Cavanaugh, is finally putting the bow on his epic, sci-fi trilogy with the release of the third Cassa book, CassaStorm.

The good news: The cover rocks ALMOST as hard as the Ninja Rocker himself.

The bad news: We're going to have wait a bit to read it.

Nonetheless, let's all wish Alex a resounding 'HUZZAH', and let our eyes indulge in this tasty treat:

CassaStorm by Alex J. Cavanaugh

A storm gathers across the galaxy…

Byron thought he’d put the days of battle behind him. Commanding the Cassan base on Tgren, his only struggles are occasional rogue pirate raids and endless government bureaucracies. As a galaxy-wide war encroaches upon the desert planet, Byron’s ideal life is threatened and he’s caught between the Tgrens and the Cassans.

After enemy ships attack the desert planet, Byron discovers another battle within his own family. The declaration of war between all ten races triggers nightmares in his son, shaking Bassan to the core and threatening to destroy the boy’s mind.

Meanwhile the ancient alien ship is transmitting a code that might signal the end of all life in the galaxy. And the mysterious probe that almost destroyed Tgren twenty years ago could be on its way back. As his world begins to crumble, Byron suspects a connection. The storm is about to break, and Byron is caught in the middle…

Don't Sweat The Details

Hey gang! Hope this post finds you all making steady progress on your writing and/or life goals. If not, it's only Tuesday, so there's plenty of time to get on with it. :-)

Today, I'm sharing the cover of my pal's (Victoria H. Smith) latest work: The Space Between. If you know V, you know she is an absolute ball of energy and fun. But you might not know she brings that same enthusiasm and passion to her writing endeavors. (Plus, I hear she weaves a mean romance!)  So you'll definitely want to make it to the bottom of the post to check TSB out.

But first, a brief message from the blogger of the house:

Don't Sweat The Details

Details. The Devil is in them, and wherever that son-of-a-gun is hanging out, you can be sure troubles aren't far behind.

Don't get me wrong. Any writer worth their salt will tell you that writing is a business of details. Details take an average story to great. Details keep a reader thinking about your story long after they've put it down for the night. Details will need to be handled if you plan to publish your work.

No doubt, details are important--in writing AND life.

However, details have this way of burying us when it comes to large, never-ending tasks. And any writer worth their salt will also tell you that becoming a good writer is very much a large and never-ending task.

You can always be better, do better. You will never please every reader, reviewer, editor, etc.. There will always be things you don't know. Perfection is not an option. Just the nature of a honing a craft, I'm afraid.

Details can gnaw and worry you until your goals and dreams are unrecognizable bits that are easily washed away in the floods of doubt and life that inevitably come. (Think of them as our freaking monsoon seasons.)

I think wiser folks use the saying, "Not seeing the forest for the trees." Don't do that.

So what DO you do? Details are important, but can clearly cause problems.

Here's what I recommend: Approach your writing, and life, with a child's perspective and determination.

If a kid wants to go to the zoo, they don't get bogged down in the details. They aren't worried about things like money, transportation, pants--they just want to go to the zoo, and are already planning what they're going to do there before they even know if it's possible.

(I'm not suggesting your write without pants on, by the way. But it can be done. Just sayin'...)

All I'm saying is that if you put in the time, and are determined, the details have a way of working themselves out. You don't have to master them all at once, so why try?

~EJW~

Two Awesome Covers, Same Great Taste!

Hey gang! Today I have the honor of sharing two amazing covers with you.

The first is from my pal Julie Flanders for her upcoming release, Polar Night. I think the cover (and Julie!) is fabulous, and I am beyond excited for her.

The second is for Susy Asylum from the talented author, Michael Pierce. Susy sounds like it's going to be an intense read, and I think the cover very much speaks to that vibe.

Congrats to both on the awesome covers, and much success going forward!

Feast your peeps:

Polar Night by Julie Flanders

When Detective Danny Fitzpatrick leaves his hometown of Chicago and moves to Fairbanks, Alaska he wants nothing more than to escape the violence and heartbreak that left his life in pieces. Numbed by alcohol and the frozen temperatures of an Alaskan winter, Danny is content with a dead-end job investigating Fairbanks' cold cases. That all changes when a pretty blond woman goes missing on the winter solstice, and Danny stumbles upon some surprising connections between her disappearance and that of another Fairbanks woman three years earlier. Forced out of his lethargy, Danny sets out to both find the missing woman and solve his own cold case.

The investigation points Danny towards Aleksei Nechayev, the handsome and charming proprietor of an old asylum turned haunted tourist attraction in the Arctic town of Coldfoot. As he tries to find a link between Nechayev and his case, Danny's instinct tells him that Nechayev is much more than what he seems.

Danny has no idea that Nechayev is hiding a secret that is much more horrifying than anything he could ever have imagined. As his obsession with finding the missing women grows, Danny finds his own life in danger. And when the truth is finally revealed, the world as he knows it will never be the same.

Author Bio: Julie Flanders is a librarian and a freelance writer who has written for both online and print publications. She is an avid animal lover and shares her home in Cincinnati, Ohio with her dog and cat. Polar Night, a suspense thriller with a supernatural twist, is her first novel. It will be published by Ink Smith Publishing on February 7, 2013. Find Julie online at her blog, on Twitter, and on Facebook.

Susy Asylum, The Lorne Family Vault, Book 2

by Michael Pierce

Cover Art by Sketcher Girl Studios- Vic Caswell
In SUSY Asylum, there is no release. There is no escape. No hope. In SUSY Asylum, the patients come face-to-face with their mirrors, locked away with the other halves of themselves who are thirsty for more than blood. Or so says Commodore Chaos.

Oliver and Desiree are introduced to the writings of the mysterious blogger, Commodore Chaos, when they return to Provex City to indulge in what the sublime city has to offer. The blogger claims the Lornes are collecting people venturing between the higher planes of awareness and locking them away in their mythical asylum. But are these legitimate concerns for inter-plane travelers or just the ramblings of an anonymous conspiracy blogger?

Oliver looks to the city as his only connection to his father while Desiree looks to the city as an escape from the torment of losing her best friend—again. Provex City is a wonder of beautiful treasures, entrancing them to continue returning. But behind the beauty, wolves have continued hunting Oliver, a boy who is still mostly unaware of his importance in the rebellion.

Oliver’s belief is waning. Desiree will not always be by his side. Mr. Gordon will not always come to his aid. Oliver finds himself alone, forced to confront his biggest fears, fight his inner demons, and face the very cold reality that no one is coming to save him.

Welcome to SUSY Asylum.
